Transforming an empty shell into Pudding Cottage
Pudding Cottage is owned by Jacky and Bill Morrison who live in the Wirral. Bill first discovered the Lake District after spending weeks roaming the Lakeland fells working on his Geology thesis. After getting married, he introduced his wife and subsequently their 3 children to the area and they have spent many happy holidays in the Lakes. Their experience of the holiday homes they rented was very mixed –some good, some bad some ugly!!
Jacky felt that she knew what was needed to make a successful holiday let and they decided to put their ideas into practice and bought Pudding when it was little more than a shell with a very dodgy roof!
The cottage forms part of what was the coach house and stable block for William Lowther, 1st Earl of Lonsdale whose country house is now the Merewood Hotel in Ecclerigg. The cottage fell into disrepair for many years and was brought back to its former glory and completely modernised in 2002. Since then Pudding has gone from strength to strength! It has featured in a number of magazine articles and radio and TV programmes and has won a host of industry and guest nominated awards.
Renovation of Pudding Cottage
The day to day management of the cottage is done by Jacky who has an impressive encyclopaedic knowledge of the guests who have stayed there over the past 9 years!
At the heart of their success is their desire to ensure that their guests have a really good holiday experience with a focus on individual service which starts from the first point of enquiry. They want their guests to feel like they are walking into their own home but also have luxurious touches and little extras that make the difference. For families with children – they have the philosophy that if the children are happy – then the parents can relax! We provide a range of equipment, toys and crafts for little ones and games consoles, DVDs and even a sledge for the older children.
Pudding Cottage as it is today
However we don't just cater for families – for the walkers amongst you, Pudding is ideally situated adjacent to a network of footpaths up to Troutbeck and from there across the high fells. After arriving – you need never use your car again as a frequent bus service runs from the bottom of the lane to Ambleside, Grasmere and beyond.
